When Your World Turns White

You hope the forecast is overblown. But then, a snowflake drifts past the window, at first tentative and soft, as if it’s asking permission. Then another. By the time you realize the storm is serious, the world has already started to change.
Time seems to slow down, as if the storm has pressed a giant pause button on daily life.
But snow isn’t just pretty, it can be disruptive. Schedules unravel. Flights are canceled. Everything closes. Emails that once demanded immediate replies suddenly feel less urgent when the power flickers and the internet slows to a crawl.
Winter storms also remind us of our limits. They demand preparation and work. Shovels come out. Salt is scattered. Neighbors check on neighbors. There’s a quiet kind of solidarity in a storm—shared nods between strangers clearing sidewalks, mutual understanding that everyone is working with the same cold hands and stiff shoulders. Bring out the Arnica Gel!
Snow was so much more delightful when one was a kid. You knew it brought a chance of closed school and time off. Now, it just means more work! But winter doesn’t last very long. Just recently, I saw the tips of the sprouting of daffodils in the soil. Yes, a sure sign that Spring will come sooner than later!
